Architecture for a sustainable and resilient future: a residential typology for urban infill

The very notion of environmental sustainability and stewardship is being fundamentally undermined by residential home building trends in the U.S and globally. These trends are characterized by the continued growth of the suburbs, increasing size of homes, and decreasing size of households, with concomitant depopulation and economic and material decline of urban neighborhoods. This thesis explores the relationship between the growing suburbs, the urban core and contemporary culture. This exploration is used to inform an architectural response that is intended to make a contribution to the reversal of these unsustainable trends. This thesis supports the argument that a progressive residential architecture will allow for sustainable homes without sacrificing good design and while also maintaining a cost model that is appropriate to a young, professional demographic. The resulting design is a progressive residential typology and prototype for urban infill on vacant lots. This single-family, residential typology will harmoniously integrate good design, sustainability and cost appropriateness by focusing on optimizing four categories of construction and design: size, structure, site, and interior finishes.
