Abstract
The objective of the present work is to review and contrast the many studies conducted by various groups on pool boiling heat transfer of nanofluids and to come up with the factors that are responsible for the varying results obtained by addition of nanoparticles in solution reported by various groups. As part of the study an isothermal computational simulation was conducted to study the effect of structural disjoining pressure component on pool boiling heat transfer of nanofluids. The continuity and momentum equations were numerically solved over the domain and the Volume of Fluid (VOF) method was incorporated to track the liquid-vapor interface. Simulations were carried out for pure water and nanofluid volume fraction of 0.35. The results show that there seems to be a negative effect of addition of nanoparticles in solution due to the increase in thermal conductivity being overshadowed by the huge increase in viscosity and decrease in specific heat. The increase in heat transfer reported by various groups was established to be caused due to the effect of macroscale particle thermal conductivity due to the deposition rather than due to the increase in thermal conductivity of the nanofluid. The structural disjoining pressure component didn’t seem to affect heat transfer significantly.
