Changes in Dialogic Book Reading Patterns of Parent's Reading with Their Children

This study examined changes (pretest, posttest, followup) in the parents of 2 year old children with language delay as they participated in a literacy training intervention. The four book reading strategies that were investigated were, (1) expansions, (2) repetition, (3) wh-questions, and (4) verbal praise. Half of the 20 parent subjects (experimental group) received instruction in the reading strategies. The other half (control group) had no instruction before final data were collected. The group training sessions were 60 and 35 minutes in length the total training was completed in six weeks. The data were collected via 15 minute samples of video recordings during storybook interaction before and after the group training. A significant main effect of the training was obtained for the parental use of expansions during reading. The results of this study demonstrated that parents used this reading strategy more frequently following training. The data also provided evidence to support further research to investigate which strategies are effective for children of parents who are 2 years old with language disorders so training can be individualized to meet the specific needs of each parent and child.
