Saudi Arabian Students’ Perceptions of Oral Classroom Participation

Abstract Details

2015, EdD, University of Cincinnati, Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services: Literacy and Second Language Studies.
Saudi Arabian students are the fourth largest group of international students in the United States. These students come from a dramatically different cultural, religious, and academic background. Despite the large and growing Saudi Arabian student population, few studies have investigated their linguistic and educational needs in their new academic environment. This dissertation presents a research study conducted with Saudi Arabian students in the United States. The goal of the study was to understand Saudi Arabian students’ perceptions of oral classroom participation in their new classrooms in the United States, focusing on specific academic activities including oral academic presentations, whole class discussions, small group discussions, and paired work. Further, the study intended to gather suggestions from Saudi Arabian students for their American professors and peers to help with their academic assimilation with the idea that the American faculty is aware of the challenges that SA students might face in their classroom. This study employed Mixed Methods Research, specifically convergent parallel design. Data were collected via surveys and interviews and analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The study’s survey established that Saudi Arabian students are generally comfortable with oral classroom participation; however, interviews revealed challenges that Saudi Arabian students face with oral classroom participation, particularly with presentations and whole class discussions. The study also presents the recommendations to professors and students on how to create a classroom environment most conducive to oral participation by Saudi Arabian students.
