Abstract Details

2016, PhD, University of Cincinnati, Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services: Educational Studies.
Little is known about female and feminist identities among Iranian Muslim immigrant women in the United States. This study highlights the situation of immigrant women, who are for the most part ignored in the prevailing immigration discourse. This investigation utilized phenomenological methodology to form descriptive themes about the lived experience of a group of Iranian Muslim immigrant women (IWG) in the Midwest with respect to their female and feminist identities and the interconnections with Islam and immigration. The aim in the current study was to provide accurate, rich, and detailed answers to the research questions using diagrammatic elicitation, semi-structured individual interviews, and observation as the primary tools for collecting data. Two themes emerged through diagrammatic elicitation: 1) immigration and experiencing more freedom and autonomy, and 2) immigration and different conditions. Five themes emerged during the interviews, including: 1) social change and a new definition of the situation; 2) different values; 3) empowerment and emancipation; 4) fulfillment of needs; and 5) self-image. Three themes emerged during the observation of the IWG meetings: 1) gender identity versus national and religious identities; 2) America, the land of opportunities; and 3) to be or not to be is the question.
