The Energy+ Skyscraper: A Critical Investigation, Rethinking, and Redesign of the Sustainable Tower Typology

Abstract Details

2016, MARCH, University of Cincinnati, Design, Architecture, Art and Planning: Architecture.
Current trends in population growth, urban migration, and the consumption of nonrenewable resources require a new type of architecture that responds critically to our environmental problems and energy demands. As the most ubiquitous building type in intensive urban environments, the all-glass skyscraper is also one the largest parasitic energy consumers. The collision of these trends with the consumption factor of the tower typology calls for the rethinking of our approach to design through an energy plus model that reverses typical building behavior and feeds the city grid. By embracing what the typology could provide as a design solution we are able to cultivate a framework for a sustainable future. Implementing bioclimatic strategies with energy production methods and technological solutions to the building envelope can pave a path to the realization of energy plus applications in high-density development and increased social awareness of these architectural solutions. The culmination of this approach is the energy plus skyscraper.
