Increasing numbers of people are using the latest compact, convenient and portable medical equipment and new wireless health care technologies. The new portable devices are a double – edged sword since they have the potential to play a transformational role in health care sector but also possess a risk to the patient’s and the provider’s safety and privacy. This technology can be exposed to cybersecurity risks such as hacking and may be vulnerable to unauthorized access. A national standard was set up to protect a person’s health information, personal medical records and data under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). But work is required to ensure adherence to this standard. The percentage of data breaches in the healthcare industry is higher compared to other sectors such as education, finance and business. Thus, the security of these telehealth technologies which transfer patient information and personal data continuously is of vital importance. One way to ameliorate the problem of data breaches is to use the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES). Power, memory and pin utilization are some of the main resources consumed by different units in AES. In the cryptographic sector, one important factor is power analysis. The Substitute Box (S –Box) is a main unit of an AES system and it consumes the most power among the circuit elements. A comparison of the power requirements for different S-Box designs is presented and analysis and evaluation of power usage for the most-optimized S-Box in terms of power, logic elements and other resources is performed. This thesis will help designers to choose the right S-Box design for particular requirements and scenarios.
