Transitional Architecture: Architectures Response to a Social Program

Abstract Details

2016, MARCH, University of Cincinnati, Design, Architecture, Art and Planning: Architecture.
Currently, the USA has an alarmingly large prison population, 25% of the worlds prison population, and a significant rate of recidivism, currently 60%, together these describe a cyclical relationship that deny people with criminal records access to society’s normative pathways and thus a way out of the criminal justice system; despite the numerous studies looking at what makes a good rehabilitation program and the positive impact that architecture can have on physical and psychological well-being there are few precedents utilizing and implementing this knowledge in a combined efficacious strategy. The question how can the transitional process from prison to society be improved, is central to the thesis question: can architecture with its proven ability to create places that improve learning, healing, and productivity play an active role in the transtional process by responding to a proposed social program instead of simply providing shelter.
