A Systems Approach to Prevent and Mitigate Property Abandonment through Analyzing Multiscalar Interactions and Interconnected Mechanisms

Abstract Details

2016, PhD, University of Cincinnati, Design, Architecture, Art and Planning: Regional Development Planning.
Abandoned property poses a problem for communities and regions. These problems start with the failure of an owner to maintain his responsibilities to a single property and results in the spread of greater negative externalities. Due to the complex nature of abandoned properties and the corollary problems it is difficult to understand the problem. This study applies a systems approach to analyze property abandonment through multiscalar interactions and interconnected mechanisms. This is accomplished by mapping current abandonment and creating a risk index for future abandonment. This map of abandonment risk is analyzed to understand the spatial patterns of abandonment. These maps of current and future abandonment risk are further analyzed to develop better policy decisions that will mitigate current abandonment and prevent future decline.
