This study examines the effect of “big events,” such as terrorist attacks and economic crises, on attitudes toward immigrants in Spain. I argue that after big events happen, negative attitudes rise among the native population and that, depending of the type of event, different groups feel their interests compromised. To investigate these issues, I analyze data from the World Values Survey for the years 2000, 2007 and 2011. The findings from 2000 and 2007 suggest that after terrorist attacks, people from the area where the attack took place are significantly more prone to develop negative attitudes towards immigrants than those from other, unaffected, areas. The findings from 2007 and 2011, the period surrounding the global financial crisis, are more inconsistent. This study provides the first comparative analysis of the effects of different types of big events on attitudes toward immigrants.
