An Examination of Endometriosis Hospital Diagnoses in 2012 and 2013 across the United States

Abstract Objective - The main focus of this study was to examine patients admitted into the hospitals who obtained a diagnosis of endometriosis. The data used was gathered by the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) for the years 2012 and 2013. The raw data shows 89,870 and 76,819 females admitted into hospitals that were given a diagnosis of endometriosis. Of these patients, 46,290 were admitted into the hospital because they were experiencing symptoms pertaining to endometriosis. The analysis looked at two groups: the first group was every patient admitted to a hospital who had been diagnosed with endometriosis, and the second group was patients admitted to the hospital because of endometriosis symptoms. Age, length of stay, total cost, procedure codes, and regional distribution were examined for this study. Nine different types of endometriosis, determined by ICD-9 codes, were also examined. Design - Descriptive statistics of hospital admission due to endometriosis were inspected from the 2012 and 2013 NIS datasets. Descriptive statistics of the U.S. hospital patients with endometriosis were also explored for 2012 and 2013. The source of the raw data comes from National Inpatient Sample (NIS) from the Health Cost of Utilization Project (HCUP). Results – In 2012 there were 89,870 ± 1,496 females in the United States that were admitted to the hospital with endometriosis, while in 2013 there were 76,819 ± 1,345 females admitted. Most of the patients were between 20 and 55 years of age. About 50% of patients were in the hospital for less than 2 days. More than 50% of patients were charge less than $29,000. Conclusion – The proportion of female patients with endometriosis across the different regions was not significant. The average age of a female admitted to the hospital with endometriosis in this study was found to be 40 years old. The average cost of a hospital stay for someone admitted because of endometriosis symptoms is about $35,000. The median for a length of stay for one of these hospital visits is 2 days.
