A Prevalence Analysis of Hospital Admissions of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease in 2012 and 2013

Abstract Details

2017, MS, University of Cincinnati, Medicine: Biostatistics (Environmental Health).
Abstract Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a common disease. In the United States, current estimates suggest about 12 million people have been diagnosed with COPD, and many more who unknowingly have the disease (1). In the study, we want to assess the prevalence analysis of hospital admissions for COPD, and estimate the total number of discharge for participating and missing states. The National Inpatient Sample Database of Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project, sponsored by the agency for Healthcare Research and Quality for the year 2012 and 2013 were utilized for this study. The Diagnosis Related Groups (DRG) Codes 190, 191,192 are used to isolate data on COPD. The International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision (ICD-9) code 49121 was used to identify patients with acute exacerbation of COPD. Missing states were predicted using linear regression for prevalence analysis. Distributions of gender, age, length of stay, total charge with standard error are determined for all COPD stay, 40 years and older COPD patients, and among those with main COPD diagnosis of acute exacerbation. The gender distribution is about 58% females versus 41 percent males. The mean length of stay of all COPD stay is 4 days. The mean hospital charge for COPD patients with acute exacerbation is $28583 as the highest one. Distributions are different in each group. The top 5 COPD main conditions and secondary conditions associated with the main COPD diagnosis are identified. The top main condition is Obstructive Chronic Bronchitis with (acute) exacerbation for 65% of COPD patients.
