Abstract
Most people wish to remain in their homes as they age, and studies have demonstrated that this is often the ideal manner to age. Once a senior loses their ability to complete activities of daily living, they are often relocated from their home to a live-in care facility. Cognitive abilities are a primary factor in remaining capable of these activities. While many factors are at play in removing a senior from their home and into a care facility, this paper focuses on cognitive abilities and how proper and improper nutrition contributes to retaining cognitive abilities. Improper nutrition in the elderly population stems from several potential reasons. One commonly overlooked reason could be poor choice at the grocery store. Seniors elect poorly because of three factors: 1) their prior dietary staples now fall outside of their nutritional guidelines, 2) they are not familiar with choosing their own food, or 3) their usual shopping list now must be pared down to fit their budget. A shopping system for the grocery store which optimizes food selection based on individual nutritional needs and addresses these three factors, is one solution this paper will explore.
