Prevention of Cathodic Delamination of Polyurethane Adhesive from Ti-6Al-4V Alloy Using Fluorinated Primers

Abstract Details

2017, PhD, University of Cincinnati, Engineering and Applied Science: Materials Science.
The cathodic delamination of a polyurethane adhesive from grit-blasted Ti-6Al-4V alloy was inhibited by the application of primers to the titanium surface. The rate of cathodic delamination was determined by measuring the decrease in the fracture toughness of double cantilever beam test specimens after exposure to an accelerated cathodic delamination environment. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showed that the mode of failure of the double cantilever beam test specimens that had been exposed to a cathodic delamination environment was mostly interfacial between the metal oxide surface and its adherend. The best performing primer was a fluorosiloxane film deposited from an aqueous alcohol solution containing heptadecafluoro-1,1,2,2-tetrahydrodecyl)trimethoxysilane. The best performing primer decreased the rate of cathodic delamination by at least a factor of 50 compared to a primerless control. Decreasing the hydrophobicity of the fluorosiloxane primer increased the rate of cathodic delamination. Therefore this work concludes that the primers inhibited the cathodic delamination process by excluding water from the primer/metal oxide interface.
