Pictogram System to Resolve Language Barriers in Medical Communication, Investigation, Diagnosis and Treatment

Abstract Details

2017, MDES, University of Cincinnati, Design, Architecture, Art and Planning: Design.
The purpose of this research study is to develop a system that improves communication through visual language in a medical context to be used in the Indian subcontinent. In cases where a medical practitioner has to communicate with a low-literacy level, migrant patient or those who do not speak a common language, and means of obtaining a translator are limited, this project will push to give the patient visual aids to explain his/her condition resulting in a collaborative effort with a practitioner. This study will also explore the design of effective symbols, icons and pictograms to facilitate communication between patient and medical provider who do not speak a common language.
