Abstract
Opera is a very exciting field in today’s world, and it is an environment that the author is keenly interested in entering. He is also keenly interested, however, in operas that relate tales based on segments of culture not frequently represented in the opera house. Windlife vs. Let’s Read is the composer’s first attempt at writing an opera based on life on the internet, which is one of these segments of culture. It concerns a group of three people who run a show on the internet in which they make fun of bad fiction, and chronicles what happens when they invite a writer and his editor onto the show. The drama comes when it comes out that the editor may not necessarily have the writer’s best interests in mind: the fallout from this revelation shatters a friendship, but as the opera’s denouement shows it may not necessarily be such a bad thing. It also features various scenes in which the three people who run the show engage in comedic antics, featuring spoofs of various styles from jazz to rap. In addition to writing the music, the composer has also written his own libretto for this opera. The opera features a highly charged, colorful score written for five singers and a large chamber orchestra, and would be performed in one uninterrupted act that runs for a total of fifty-five minutes. This dissertation presents the opera in its completed orchestral form, complete with stage directions and scene divisions.
