Acceptance of International Teaching Assistants: Linguistic Competency Fomenting the Environment for Microaggressions

Abstract Details

2017, EdD, University of Cincinnati, Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services: Literacy and Second Language Studies.
With few recent examples of existing research, this study examined undergraduate students’ perceptions and behaviors toward international graduate students who perform teaching related duties whether with full time faculty as a stand-alone instructor or in a lab environment. This study is an expansion of a pilot study that found International Teaching Assistants (ITAs) were targets of soft and oblique harassment known as microaggressions. Participants were 186 undergraduate students who had taken courses with non-native ITAs and completed a survey. Results showed that undergraduate students’ perception did not concur with their ITAs’ measured English proficiency levels using standardized English tests, such as TOEFL, IELTS, and PTE. The discrepancy seems to foment an environment for microaggressions for ITAs. The ESL community will need to reexamine testing and training procedures based on the perceptions of undergraduate students, the group with whom ITAs spend the bulk of their time, in order to improve classroom conditions for all involved.
