Emblems of Home: An Idea for Multi-Family Living

Abstract Details

2018, MARCH, University of Cincinnati, Design, Architecture, Art and Planning: Architecture.
This thesis seeks to analyze the emblems of the detached single family house and re-contextualize their value in a densely clustered environment. The multi-family apartment building is the national response to a housing shortage caused by a lack of affordable options, increased demand and in some markets, both. For the past two decades, the quality of this form of housing is increasing driven by market forces and codes over values. They are urban adaptations of the commodification and creation of idealist portrayals of the "American" way of life that Suburban America reflects. In the translation from the single-family house to multi-family apartments, the parts of the dwelling that represent American values are replaced or absent: the fence, the yard, the porch, the garage and the fireplace. If the parts of the single-family house represent the values of Americans in the age of suburban growth, then the reinterpretation of the parts can present a contemporary future-oriented narrative as a basis of design.
