Improving the Quality of an After-Visit Summary (AVS) to Enhance Patient-Centered Care

Abstract Details

2018, MA, University of Cincinnati, Arts and Sciences: Communication.
This study explored the effectiveness and usefulness of an After-Visit Summary (AVS) designed and employed at the International Adoption Center and International Travel Clinic at Cincinnati Children's Hospital. AVS chart counts showed increased use by clinic staff over a 2-year period. Two sets of interviews also were conducted with parents of minor patients (n = 27) and clinic providers (n = 8) to explore perceptions of AVS effectiveness and usefulness. Interview data was analyzed using a constant comparison approach (Glaser & Strauss, 1967) along with Tracy’s (2013) iterative emic approach. Results showed the AVS was perceived as useful and effective by both parents and providers. Parents used the After-Visit Summary (AVS) as a tool to aid with managing parental uncertainty, increasing avenues for parents to become more active participants in their child’s care, and helped promote the goals of patient-centered care. Future research should examine AVS employment in a wider range of clinic settings and explore tailoring AVS to further the goals of patient-centered, personalized healthcare.
