Nuclear forensic science supports law enforcement in determining attribution in the case of a nuclear or radiological event. Apprehended or post-detonation nuclear or radiological material can be characterized to determine its physical and chemical characteristics, which are reflective of the material’s identity, source, age, and intended use. Chemical separations play a key role in high-precision analytical techniques and make it possible to separate trace quantities of analyte from large quantities of interferents.
