The Social Future of Small Town America

Tomko, Jonathan E

Abstract Details

2018, MARCH, University of Cincinnati, Design, Architecture, Art and Planning: Architecture.
As big cities become overrun by gentrification, rising costs of living, and displacement of existing communities, America’s small cities and small towns are struggling to adjust to new economic realities. Small cities are often unconsidered as design problems and present multiple opportunities for the future as places of living and working. However, small cities are economically weak, and are perceived to be places that do not have much to offer in terms of lifestyle. By examining the small town as a distinct urban condition, especially in regards to the unique social dynamic, this thesis makes the case for methods to leverage the unique societal condition as a lifestyle asset for the future of the small town, and how architecture and urban design can provide a framework for the regeneration of Small Town America as desirable places to live and work.
