Using a Signifier as a Unifying Element in the System Design of a Table Setting

Abstract Details

2018, MDES, University of Cincinnati, Design, Architecture, Art and Planning: Design.
The market is saturated with uninteresting products competing for our attention. The challenge for designers is to create a product which rises above the others. The signifier is a critical element of any functional product design. It provides hints as to how a consumer can interact with an object, inviting them to engage in an exploration of the product. This thesis explores how a signifier can be used both as an appealing component of a table setting and as the primary unifying element of the setting. The creative use of the design element can produce a product line which can successfully compete against more mundane competitors.
