Development of a Spatial Coordinate Digitizer for Applications in Structural Dynamics using an RGB-D Camera

The objective of this thesis was to develop a spatial coordinate digitizer using a consumer RGB-D device. The digitizer can be a useful tool towards creating maps of sensor locations on structures tested for structural dynamics. As such, the proposed functionality of a digitizer can be extended to any experimental setup. The chosen device was a Microsoft Kinect v2, as an inexpensive option when compared to commercial digitizers currently available. It has also been studied extensively as a research tool in computer vision. Along with a Multi-Marker Target-Tracker (MMTT), a remote switch, and a MATLAB interface, a spatial coordinate digitizer was successfully developed. A case was run using a small test structure with reasonable accuracy, under 13 mm from the ground truth. Sensor locations on the test structure were estimated multiple times to test for repeatability. Results and errors for all attempts have been listed in the presented work, along with limitations of the method and avenues for future work.
