Evaluation of AISC Steel Coupling Beam Embedment Length in Composite Ordinary Shear Walls

Abstract Details

2018, MS, University of Cincinnati, Engineering and Applied Science: Civil Engineering.
Potential impacts of recent changes in AISC seismic provisions (AISC 341-16) for embedment length of steel coupling beams in composite ordinary coupled walls were investigated. According to the 2010 edition, coupling beam-wall connections were designed to develop the full capacity of the steel coupling beams. However, the connections are now designed to resist only the calculated elastic demands, which results in shorter embedment lengths. Analysis carried on 25 story prototype building revealed that with a small amount of connection loss, while the extent of damage to wall strength parameters was limited, the building underwent drift problems. For a system that has not been studied in detail, since a small expected loss has been shown to be detrimental, changes to existing provisions should be made along with detailed experimental analysis to understand coupling beam-wall connection behavior in the ordinary system.
