Liminal Landscapes: Conditioning Climates on the Chicago Riverfront

Abstract Details

2019, MARCH, University of Cincinnati, Design, Architecture, Art and Planning: Architecture.
Urban waterfronts, as Kevin Ramsey conveys, are the product of historic fixities and flows that connect the city to globalizing networks of capital, goods, people, and ideas. Historically, industry was built at the water’s edge, as industry relied on this adjacency. Today’s industry has changed to where industry does not rely on water; thus, the water’s edge becomes an opportunity to be redefined. Chicago’s riverfront is one such example where due to the changing landscape of industry in its’ modernizing economy, riverfront spaces that were primarily private must now reinvent themselves and become integrated with the urban fabric. Although some portions of Chicago’s riverfront are developed, they?are active public spaces only in the few summer months, but become unusable in the winter. This thesis demonstrates how specialized atmospheres, or dedicated places for a specific climate, can serve as a tool to reactivate the Chicago riverfront during problematic or uncomfortable climate conditions. Using Philippe Rahm’s syntax of meteorological architecture to understand climatic devices and microclimate simulation tools, an atmospheric position urges the rethinking of these urban spaces. Situating a new type of public amenity adjacent to privately owned businesses will expose new patterns of social and economic activity while also strengthening access to the riverfront.
