Abstract Details

2019, MARCH, University of Cincinnati, Design, Architecture, Art and Planning: Architecture.
This thesis aims to look at residential areas that are located in a high-risk fire zones and provide a new housing system and way of living for those residents to minimize the risk of wild fire attack and devastation through the application fire-wise design and planning. Within this document, there is a series of investigations to guide readers through the impacts and workable solutions already set in place by governing officials and research architects and planners. The problem is addressed by showing the increasing effects of fire destruction over several years in California and the West Coast and specifically how us as humans have created a less habitable planet through poor fire management. The fires and other climate-related disasters have been increasing at a phenomenal rate yet the housing and neighborhood structure has remained the same. Due to a lack of change in the suburban environment, fires have caused millions of dollars of damage and thousands of destroyed structures. This thesis uses the case of the Northern California Firestorm in October of 2017 and more specifically the area of Coffey Park in Santa Rosa, California to understand more fully the implications of designing in a place of devastation.
