Compartmentalization of Hookah Smoking: Exploring Tobacco, Charcoal and Smoke

Abstract Details

2019, PhD, University of Cincinnati, Arts and Sciences: Chemistry.
The use of water pipes or hookahs to smoke tobacco formulations has gained great popularity among young people around the world, but the potential health hazards have not yet been adequately evaluated. There is a demand for methods to test the various compartments including tobacco, charcoal and smoke. The studies in this dissertation include original work to develop quantitative methods for elemental analysis on 16 charcoal brands and arsenic speciation on 4 in hookah charcoal. An all glass smoking machine has been developed to collect hookah smoke for experiments with human lung cells. Lung cell experiments show that hookah smoke does have an effect on cell viability and release of Interleukin-8 release.
