Reconstructing the Fabric of Place - A Network of Community

Abstract Details

2019, MARCH, University of Cincinnati, Design, Architecture, Art and Planning: Architecture.
The goal of this investigation is to determine how the existing building typology of a community center can serve as a framework for designing a more integrated system for personal and communal development. This project is an exploration of what a community center can offer an area when it is totally reimagined and changed from the typical classification. Framed within criteria individual to its context, the project is an investigation of possibility for a specified area, but does not serve as an attempt to be a cure-all solution. The project is an investigation of an imaginative vision in the development of a more receptive and expressive community plan that coherently links a network of public places. Throughout this exploration, the architectural experience is investigated and considered, along with attention to place-making within the cultural norms of the selected area of Northside, Ohio. Attention to local issues and concerns with the current community center are thoroughly researched and considered. The project displays a design strategy that is responsive to its immediate context, both past and present. The project reconsiders the ability of architecture to reach beyond its general walls and generates meaning and experience outside of the typical building-envelope boundaries. Community-based growth and development is the focus of this project. Three avenues of program are explored in depth: connectivity, community involvement, and expression. These programs serve to include the diversities among the community within an appropriate way to create opportunity for all members in the area. Creating a public system that holds the ability to blend social production and consumption, the program of this community network has the ability to cultivate a stronger sense of identity and culture amongst the embedded community, reweaving the area into a stronger fabric.
