Cultural DNA and Product Innovation: A Guideline of Establishing and Utilizing Cultural DNA Banks

Abstract Details

2019, MDES, University of Cincinnati, Design, Architecture, Art and Planning: Design.
Following the culturally-based product design methodology, this thesis project developed a new cultural product innovation process including the establishment of cultural DNA banks. To increase the scope of Chinese products, it examined how to interpret the underlying meaning behind Chinese traditions and transfer the decoded cultural elements into contemporary product designs. This is a theoretical thesis project supported by a case study. From cultural transfer methods of SETIG (social, economic, technological, ideological and geographical) factors analysis, ICA (interpreting cultural artifacts), visual language analysis chosen in CPI (cultural product initiative), findings were analyzed and applied on a designed lamp. This research also set rules and guided designers on how to improve the cultural DNA banks and employ cultural elements in DNA banks to develop cultural products effectively. Design discussions were proposed to improve cultural DNA banks to better analyze Chinese traditions and store conceptual and visual design knowledge into cultural DNA banks.
