Abstract
Goal pursuit is an essential component of consumers’ life—from long-term goals (e.g., pursuing a Ph.D.) to short-term goals (e.g., finishing homework within a hour)—and yet we have little understanding about how incidental and ubiquitous factors could impact consumers goal pursuit. In my first essay, I present a framework that outlines the importance of perceived bad luck on consumer goal pursuit. In my second essay, I detail the impact of not engaging in social desirable consumption on goal pursuit—here, not purchasing environmental-friendly products. In both essays, I sought to offer unique insight into the unexpected and ubiquitous factors (e.g., perception of luck and consumption) that influence consumers goal pursuit, and a framework to understand when and why individuals’ goal pursuit could be determined by these incidental factors.
