The Mystery Interval: hydrological changes and circulation pattern changes?

Norris, Nathaniel

Abstract Details

2019, MS, University of Cincinnati, Arts and Sciences: Geology.
The last glacial termination (18 to 11 thousand years before present-ka) was a period of abrupt climate changes hypothesized to be driven by changes in atmospheric circulation and the hydrological system (Denton et al., 2010). One such event of interest is the two-part Mystery Interval (Denton et al., 2006) from 17.5-14.5 ka; marked at 16.1 ka by a distinct hydrologic shift recorded by cave isotopes (Asmerom et al., 2010) and pluvial lake-level fluctuations (Broecker and Putnam, 2012) in western North America. In the mid-continent, loess deposition, reflecting wind patterns, slowed down or stopped at this time (e,g, Muhs et al., 2013). North of the Late-Wisconsin ice-margin, lake records are a common archive. Birks (1981) presents a late-glacial pollen record from Kylen Lake (47.337671° N, 91.809564° W) in northern Minnesota, detailing a variable late-glacial climate including a no-modern analog pollen assemblage, and up to 5% non-local Cretaceous pollen grains suggested to be sourced from over 400 km away in western Minnesota.
