Understanding the Mechanochemical Energetics of a SPEX 8000M Mixer/mill

Abstract Details

2019, PhD, University of Cincinnati, Arts and Sciences: Chemistry.
Over the last two decades, mechanochemistry has emerged as a new tool in the toolbox of organic chemists. Mechanochemistry replaces solvent-facilitated reactions with reactions facilitated by mechanical action. However, the usefulness and predictability of the tool has been limited by a poor understanding of how to control the energetics of mechanochemical reactors. The present work takes significant steps forward in both developing an understanding of the relevant variables, as well as describing how to control those variables, and thus the chemistry being performed with the new tool. Variables explored in this work include vessel material hardness, reactor operating frequency, vessel temperature, and the incorporation of additives, such as silica, as grinding auxiliaries. The relative roles of each of these is described, as well as insight into how to begin troubleshooting reactions based on the variables.
