Abstract Details

2019, MPH, University of Cincinnati, Medicine: Epidemiology.
Parents of seriously ill children regularly make difficult decisions impacting the length and quality of their children’s lives. One such decision is the decision whether or not to initiate long term mechanical ventilation (LTMV). Many parents utilize religion, spirituality, and/or faith in the process of decision-making (DM). This study examines semi-structured interviews of 10 religious parents who have made this decision. Significant themes include the interplay between faith-based formed of DM and “pragmatic” forms of DM including the role of familiarity with medical technology and considerations around quality of life. Faith-based forms of DM include turning to God for guidance, the role of “testimony” in aiding with DM, parents feeling chosen by God, and spiritualization of medical technology as “tools” of the divine. Other themes include the lasting spiritual impact of having been offered pregnancy termination, the experience of decisional regret and guilt, and post-decisional spiritual and emotional growth.
