Abstract
The following is a study of flexural net-section fracture of the tension flange of steel beams. It was suspected the AISC Specification, AISC 360-16 Section F13.1, used a design equation that was cautiously conservative due to the lack of experimental testing. Given the caution, the design equation is conservative in predicting the flexural strength of steel beams with holes in the tension flange. The motivation of this research was to obtain sufficient data to improve the accuracy of the design equation. This research uses finite element analysis to simulate the failure mode of tension flange fracture caused from flexure in W-shapes with holes in the tension flange. Using a material failure envelope previously developed for aluminum extrusions through the IDS (instability, ductile, and shear) criterion and a proven method to scale this aluminum failure envelope to mimic steel, fracture initiation in the tension flange can be predicted. The analysis data was used to test previously proposed design equations and develop new design equations to accurately predict the investigated failure mode. The conservativeness of the design equation in Section F13.1 was highlighted and a more accurate design equation was identified. Alternate design equations are provided as recommended replacements.
