Alpha hydroxy acid-containing chelates and their homo and hetero metallic complexes

Iron is a limited yet very essential factor for growth of marine microorganisms. Marine bacteria synthesize organic molecules called siderophores to sequester iron. Siderophores that contain a-hydroxy acid moiety are photo-responsive once bound to iron (III). This dissertation reports the synthesis of chelates containing two a-hydroxy acid moieties. Chapter 1 is the introduction that talks about the inspiration of this work. Chapter 2 discusses the synthesis of L1 and L2 (shown below) ligands and their mono-nuclear metal complexes, and the synthesis of L3 and its tri-nuclear iron complex and its quantum yield. Chapter 3 discusses the synthesis of homo and heterometallic complexes of L3 ligand and the quantum yield of the Cu-Fe complex which was found to be less than that of the Fe complex. Chapter 4 discusses the synthesis of the ester derivative of L3 as a means of placing trivalent metals in the trinitrogen site and to make the amide to avoid cluster formation when the Fe complex is made. The separation of L4 from L3 and the synthesis of Cu-L4 and Fe-L4 complexes are also presented in chapter 4.
