Middle School Children’s Attitudes Towards Peers with an Intellectual Disability

Abstract Details

2019, MS, University of Cincinnati, Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services: Health Education.
Policies on inclusion-based education have resulted in increased interaction among typically developing students and students with disabilities. Students most likely to be included in mainstream classrooms are those with learning disabilities, such as an intellectual disability (ID). Although they are more likely to be in the classroom than ever before, some children may still hold negative attitudes toward and be less accepting of children with IDs compared to peers with average cognitive functioning. The purpose of this study was to explore if empathy, gender, and contact influenced children’s attitudes towards their peers with intellectual disabilities. This study examined attitudes of 49 children in grades 6th-8th towards a fictional vignette of a child with an ID. Contrary to the hypotheses, students did not report negative attitudes towards their peers with IDs; furthermore, the variables of empathy, gender, and contact did not have significant impacts to children’s attitudes. These were positive results; however, findings must be considered tentative due to small sample size. Future research in this area should be conducted with larger sample sizes to determine if attitudes are improving and/or identify targets for future education and intervention to improve knowledge and perceptions of children with intellectual disabilities, therefore leading to increased inclusivity of those with special needs.
