Evolution of Pre-Service Teachers’ Definitions and Practices of Academic Language and Mathematical Language

Abstract Details

2020, EdD, University of Cincinnati, Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services: Curriculum and Instruction.
The construct of academic language has been part of the field of education for many years. Academic language is included in education initiatives such as the Common Core State Standards and the Teacher Performance Assessment (edTPA). Due to the inclusion of academic language in these initiatives, teacher education programs must incorporate academic language into course objectives for preparing pre-service teachers. Using the lens of dialectical constructivism, in this multiple case study I examined pre-service teachers’ development of academic and mathematical language definitions, use of academic and mathematical language in pedagogical decisions, and self-scores of pre-service teachers on related edTPA rubrics. The findings indicate a need for teacher preparation programs to incorporate experiences for pre-service teachers regarding academic and mathematical language awareness, development, and decision-making as well as opportunity for self-reflection. The findings support implications for teacher preparation programs and edTPA processes for continued growth of pre-service teachers on these constructs. Future research is needed to continue the study of the pre-service teachers experiences with academic language in teacher preparation programs.
