Abstract
Social anxiety is a mental health issue caused by genetic factors, family environment, and unhelpful thinking that develops from traumatic events and psychological vulnerability. The most widely accepted coping technique that has been used by the mental therapist is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). However, the trustful therapeutic relationship, which is necessary for maintaining the effectiveness of CBT, is hard to build and becomes an obstacle for the treatment. This study investigated what causes the difficulty of building a trustful therapeutic relationship by interviewing social anxiety patients and psychological experts. It turned out that patient self-narrative ability is an important factor that influences the quality of therapist-patient communication. The value and the feasibility of using design thinking to improve the patient self-narrative ability were then discussed. A social anxiety handbook was proposed, guiding people with social anxiety to use design thinking methods to understand and reflect on their social anxiety, and could be presented to the therapist as a medium of communication. The handbook was evaluated and reviewed by psychological experts and designers, and the results support that applying design thinking is able to benefit the communication, thus helping to cope with social anxiety.
