Determinants of Flows in Public Bike Share Systems

Abstract Details

2020, MA, University of Cincinnati, Arts and Sciences: Geography.
Public bike share systems have been in use for just over sixty years, gaining traction in the United States in the early 2010s. Station utilization across individual systems can vary, showing differences in user preferences and needs. Studying the unique differences in origin and destination flows created by these systems is an important piece in understanding how the urban public moves, particularly in regards to transportation. This study aims to address the factors influencing interactions of a public bike sharing system, station by station. Using points of interest and elevation data, this study fills the academic gap created previously by looking at bike sharing systems on a system wide level, rather than addressing user preference by station. The current study finds supporting information of previous literature, as well as expanding on understanding preference of stations in proximity of dense commercial activity represented by ATMs. We also find that stations on the outskirts of the study area are used more as an origin station, meaning users start their journey further from the city center, and tend to use a different form of transit back – showing an uneven flow between these areas. This information can have a notable impact on improving public policy in the future.
