Abstract
The country has felt the effects of an opioid crisis that peaked in 2016. In reaction, substance abuse has been fought in many ways like prevention and harm-reduction approaches. However, addiction treatment keeps showing high drop-out rates. Two major points in successful treatment cases and lower relapse rates are social engagement and meaningful belonging. But the patients in treatment face difficulties engaging in new relationships, isolation, and difficulty re-engaging as an active part of the community. On the other hand, communities still stigmatize people in addiction treatment, caring of patients is delegated or overlooked and there is a need for education and sensitization in the matter. In this exploratory research, participatory design methods were used with people in a successful recovery, to ideate ways to engage community members with people in addiction treatment. The design outcome is a community-driven initiative, in which the caring of patients in addiction treatment is shared by everyone, providing tools and resources for regular citizens to become addiction-treatment sponsors. There, providing the necessary social support that can increase the rate of treatment adherence. As part of this initiative, there is a digital platform that provides coping tools, and pairs the patient to a community member in a a 4-week program of task and rewards. Additionally, it has 3 interactions that bridge the gap between the sponsor and sponsored, in moments that present triggers and cravings
