Abstract Details

Sleep insufficiency has been declared a public health epidemic in the 21st century. Moreover, sleep loss is associated with severe adverse health and social outcomes. However, studies show that napping can compensate for sleep insufficiency. This thesis investigates the power of napping and proposes a digital tool to promote napping behavior by mentoring and encouraging people to establish regular naps. This paper argues that a designer plays a critical role in the psychology of behavior change, and a well-engineered design can reverse society’s apathy towards napping. This research is divided into four major phases: Literature Review, Methodology, Results, and Conclusion. Literature Review investigates the sleep deprivation epidemic and napping phenomenon. This phase provides psychological background information of the latest case studies about the positive impact of napping on well-being. In the Methodology phase, the author conducted 20+ one-on-one open-ended interviews, which provides a broad comprehension of the users’ napping experiences. The results phase translated consolidated user-generated findings into a proposal. Design intervention introduces an advanced tool called `iDoze’ for napping that will encourage people to engage in napping behavior. In conclusion phase, the findings shed light on three main reasons causing people to neglect the value of napping. First, low awareness of considerable impacts of napping on brain’s alertness and performance; second, inconstancy in time management to allocate time for napping, and third, lack of adherence to a newly established habit. This research contributes to addressing the abovementioned challenges mentioned above by developing a tool `iDoze’ by adopting the iterative design process through applying human-centered design principles.
