A Theory of Emotion Sharing

Abstract Details

2021, PhD, University of Cincinnati, Arts and Sciences: Philosophy.
It is often said that when we empathize, we share another’s emotion. Although there are a growing number of authors who make this claim across disciplines, there is yet to be a comprehensive account of what it would mean to share another’s emotion, and whether such a thing literally happens, or is only a manner of speech. My dissertation addresses these issues. Drawing from work in philosophy, psychology, neuroscience, and biology, I put forth an empirically grounded theory of emotion sharing. This sets the foundation for an exploration into the moral implications of emotion sharing, where I argue that sharing another’s emotion has moral value over and above our traditional conceptions of empathy.
