Mechanistic Investigations into the Photoreactivity of Organic Azides in Solution, Crystals and Cryogenic Matrices

Abstract Details

2021, PhD, University of Cincinnati, Arts and Sciences: Chemistry.
Photochemistry can be used as an excellent tool to harness the power of light to chemical synthesis and in developing stimuli-responsive smart materials. Abundance of natural sunlight or visible light LEDs have made this process sustainable and economical. One example of such chromophores is azide. Structures of these organic azides can be manipulated easily to achieve visible light reactivity and they can be used extensively in organic syntheses or in photoresponsive molecular machines. However, in most cases, the fundamental knowledge behind building these smart materials or reaction pathways for the syntheses is not well established. To resolve this issue, photoreactivity of various organic azides are explored in solution, in crystals and in cryogenic matrices in this dissertation. Mechanistic investigations are done using transient spectroscopy and with Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. Apart from that, factors controlling photoresponsive behavior of these azide crystals have been explored. By exploring these controlling factors and reaction mechanisms, potential of azide photochemistry can be fully understood.
