Abstract
Correlation of Finite Element (FE) models to experimental models via model reduction methods is a well documented technique. Model reduction methods have been used to reduce the large matrices present in the FE solution to a more manageable size without losing important modal information. The technique involves the use of a transformation matrix which can be used to reduce as well as expand back to the original size of the vector. For this technique to work a method for selection of primary degrees of freedom (DOFs) is required. This thesis focuses on creating a semi-automated method that utilizes the Exact Modal Reduction (EMR) method for reduction and an energy criterion for selection of the primary DOFs. The Modal Assurance Criterion (MAC) is used to validate the reduce model. The methodology being created in this thesis is for the purposes of a novice user to judge quickly the DOFs where measurements can be performed. The approach utlizes an iterative method of selection of the primary DOFs to arrive at an optimal number using the Exact Model Reduction (EMR). ii
