A Comparison of Cello and Viola da Gamba Bow Technique and Style from 1600–1750

Abstract Details

2021, DMA, University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music: Violoncello.
The violin and viola da gamba families have existed side-by-side since the early 16th century. The cello and bass viol from these two string families were both popular continuo instruments during the Baroque period. Many cellists during the time also played the viola da gamba and tended to hold the cello bow the same way they held the viol bow, with an underhand bow grip. The main method of holding the cello bow now, of course, came from violin playing. This document will examine the development of bow holding for both instruments, cello and viola da gamba, and the evolution of bows during the 17th and 18th centuries. It will study the rules of bowing, cello and viola da gamba techniques, and styles in different countries. It will compare some pieces written for viol and cello as case studies. Finally, it will share accounts based on interviews with current Baroque cello/viola da gamba experts about their insights into cello bowing, as compared to viol bowing.
