Considerable theoretical work has attempted to delineate the processes responsible for the variation in children’s adjustment when they have a chronic illness. This work has attempted to identify resistance factors that may buffer the relationship between chronic illness and psychological problems, or risk factors that increase the probability that a child with a chronic illness will develop psychological difficulties. Temperament is specified in this model as a specific resistance factor that moderates the impact of chronic illness on child adjustment. Despite considerable theoretical attention, temperament has received little empirical attention in the pediatric psychology literature. The primary purpose of the current study was to evaluate the relationship between temperament and emotional well-being for children with a chronic illness and case controls. This study had two hypotheses: 1) It was predicted that children in general, with more difficult parent-reported temperament will describe themselves as having more symptoms of depression and a lower global self-worth than children with easier parent-reported temperament regardless of whether or not they have a chronic illness. The first hypothesis was supported. 2) There will be a significant interaction between chronic illness and temperament in the prediction of emotional well-being such that the relationship between temperament and emotional well- being will be stronger for children with chronic illness than for case controls. More specifically, difficult temperament will be associated with more problems regarding emotional well-being in children with chronic illness. The second hypothesis was not supported.
