Maria-Iglesia: Madre del Pueblo Misionero - Papa Francisco y la piedad popular mariana en el contexto teologico-pastoral latino-americano (Mary-Church: Mother of the Missionary People – Pope Francis and popular Marian piety)

Mello, Alexandre Awi

Abstract Details

2018, Doctorate in Sacred Theology (S.T.D.), University of Dayton, International Marian Research Institute.
The dissertation highlights how Jorge Bergoglio experienced and learned to value popular Marian piety through his family roots, the Latin American theological-pastoral context and his close contact with the faithful people of God, and how this experience became a real contribution to the implementation of his vision of Church. The researcher conducted direct interviews with Pope Francis and with people close to him; thus, he studied the Marian experiences – from his childhood until his petrine ministry – and the writings of Jorge Mario Bergoglio at different stages of his life – as a Jesuit, as a bishop and as pope – in which he touches upon the Marian theme and, in particular, popular Marian piety. Therefore, the dissertation firstly describes popular Marian piety in the theological-pastoral context of Latin America and of Argentina, the environment in which Bergoglio developed his ministry. Secondly, it brings together the experiences and discourses of Jorge Mario Bergoglio regarding popular Marian piety, and finally, it compares all the data collected by ordering them according to theological key areas aiming to understand the historical influences, the systematic thought and the pastoral praxis of Pope Francis regarding popular Marian piety and its contribution to the Church. In the researcher's opinion, the formulation “Mother of the Missionary People” synthesizes the Pope’s vision of both Mary and the Church, thus condensing the theological-systematic foundation of Pope Francis’ thought and praxis regarding popular Marian piety. The author points also to some relevant pastoral consequences, as for instance the importance of a Marian Church, the value of popular Marian spirituality and the social dimension of popular Marian piety.
