Abstract
Running is a popular recreational and competitive activity, but the high rate of injury sidelines athletes and deters many from continuing the sport. This systematic review focuses on the effectiveness of physical therapy interventions in reducing recovery time after overuse injury in runners. PubMed, Scopus, CINAHL, and ProQuest Allied Nursing and Health were searched using key terms related to running, overuse injury, and physical therapy modalities. This resulted in 10,080 articles for review. After inclusion/exclusion criteria were applied, 24 articles comprised the final data pool for analysis. The intervention(s) of each study fit mostly within the categories of gait retraining, exercise, device-aided treatment, and manual therapy. The largest limitation of this review was the lack of high-level research related to the topic, however, the included case studies still provide valuable insight regarding running injury. Tendinopathies, specifically iliotibial band syndrome, fit within each treatment category. This indicates that clinicians do not need to take a “one-size-fits-all” approach to running overuse injury rehabilitation. Each case should receive individual assessment, and the clinician can choose from a variety of intervention to best fit the patient’s needs. The PROSPERO reference number of this project is CRD42018106721.
