A comparison of the occurrence of bullying in a traditional versus a Montessori school setting

Prior research has largely failed to investigate the potential impact of school climate variables as they relate to bullying among schoolchildren. The current study has attempted to address these concerns by comparing incidents of bullying between a Montessori and a traditional school. Data generated from the CPHA Safe School Survey for Grades 4 - 7 (Modified) and the student version of the School Climate Questionnaire (SCQ-S) indicated that Montessori students reported fewer incidents of physical/verbal bullying as well as a more positive school climate than did students in a traditional school. Significant differences were not found between the schools with regard to social bullying. The current study provides cautious support for the value of the Montessori Method and future research should continue to examine the role that climate and educational philosophy may play in bullying.
