Abstract Details

The current study investigated the effectiveness of augmentative communication systems in producing communication and spoken language in 21 children with developmental disabilities. Participants were matched according to age and diagnosis and taught to mand using topography- based verbal behavior (sign language), selection-based verbal behavior (the Picture Exchange Communication System/PECS), or an Automatic Reinforcement Procedure (ARP). Each participant received up to 24 sessions which consisted of 60-75 mand opportunities. Results of visual inspection indicated that children in the ARP group obtained a greater number of vocalizations and showed a greater increase in manding skills than the PECS and Sign Language groups as evidenced by scores on the Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills (ABLLS). Inferential statistics indicate there was a significant increase on ABLLS scores from pretest. There was a significant group effect on number of vocalizations obtained at end of treatment with participants trained with ARP developing a greater number of vocalizations than those trained in PECS and Sign Language. Implications to the current study and indications for future research are discussed.
